Thoughts From a Redhead

Nov 15

On Thursday when I got my birthday present from my parents (8 days early… My birthday is 11/21) my roommate Tom immediately turned it on and this happened…

First Video

And then today me and my very good friend Brandi went to Great Neck, Long Island to get our hair done. I didn’t really NEED it, but Tommy over at Thomas Cole Salon loves to keep my hair fresh and vibrant.  I know, I know… It doesn’t look different at all from the looks of the video.  I promise its a lot more fierce now than it was, though.

Brandi and Mary get their hurr did…

On Monday of last week my grandmother “Mimi” passed away.  She went peacefully in her sleep, but as expected, it was very very very hard to get the news.  I traveled down to Charlotte, NC on Thursday morning for her wake and funeral and will be in NC until Tuesday morning.

Anyway, it was so overwhelmingly nice to have so much of my large family together for her services in NC.  It doesn’t sound that exciting, but i can’t remember the last time my siblings and I were all together under one roof!  Mimi is having another funeral in CA next weekend since she will be buried next to my Papa Tom there.

My family is BIG…  Mimi had 7 children who produced 26 grandchildren who then produced 21(and counting!) great grandchildren.  CRAZY.  So needless to say, her services in NC had a lot of people and California will have a boatload as well.  How neat.

Mimi was known for all her sayings.  My favorite one she had is “Suit yourself, and you suit everybody.”  Words to live by… I tell that to people every chance I get.  Its the best advice ever.

Anywho, thats what has been going on with me…  Here are some pictures from the weekend with family…

I’m floating down a river
Oars freed from their holds long ago
Lying face up on the floor of my vessel
I marvel at the stars
And feel my heart overflow

Further down the river
Further down the river
Further down the river
Further down the river

Two weeks without my lover
I’m in this boat alone
Floating down a river named emotion
Will I make it back to shore
Or drift into the unknown

Further down the river
Further down the river
Further down the river
Further down the river

I’m building an antenna
Transmissions will be sent when I am through
Maybe we could meet again further down the river
And share what we both discovered…
Then revel in the view

Further down the river
Further down the river
Further down the river
Further down the river

I’m floating down a river
I’m floating down a river
I’m floating down a river
I’m floating down a river

Incubus playing “Aqueous Transmission” live… Awesome.

So for about a month I’ve been in that funk every artist gets in where I can’t seem to get enough creativity in my life…  No matter what I’m always hungry and searching for more to do or see.  I totally feel like a giant sponge even more now than I normally do.

Of course, as soon as I entered this oh-so-familiar place, I started searching for ways to break out of my comfort zone.

A few of weeks ago I met a very cool guy at an audition who introduced me to an awesome new place to rock out to some raw talent in Astoria, Queens.  I’ve gone every week since.  Its a cute little cafe called The Waltz Astoria (http://www.waltz-astoria.com) and I LOVE IT.  They do open mic nights on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and its pretty easy to get on the list of performers.  In fact, my second night there I performed without having anything prepared.  I just made friends with Pedro and Song (the owners) and was encouraged to sing and play.  I borrowed a guitar from a guy who had performed earlier in the night and did the damn thing.  It was so freeing!  I was very nervous to perform music in front of people, but I was proud of myself for doing it despite my inhibitions.  There are some extremely talented people that come through there.

I haven’t gone up since that night, but I truly enjoy watching and listening.  Its inspirational witnessing people vulnerably expressing themselves by sharing what they absolutely love in front of a small crowd.

I might play at the open mic again next week.  I have been making myself giggle by learning a couple Britney songs on guitar, slowing them down, and making them folk-y and different.  I’m aware this idea isn’t totally new.  If you run a YouTube “Britney Acoustic Cover” search, you’re going to see a lot of people have done this in the past but I am doing it anyway because… well… I can.

I am also currently taking my second improv course at The Upright Citizens Brigade.  Its an intensive.  Four days a week, three hours a day for two weeks.  My class performance is on Sunday, October 26 which I am excited about because my mom will be in town to catch it!

I have lived in NY for over six years, but I went to the MET for the first time last week.  Insane, I know…

I am going to try real hard to write more frequently, but for now I need sleep.  Class in the morning! :)

Oh, and do yourself a flave and listen to this song when you have some time to just close your eyes and relax.

Its absolutely beautiful.

I swear I will write a big update soon…

For now, though, I must get rest, but I had to post this quote I came across…

“Load the ship and set out. No one knows for certain whether the vessel will sink or reach the harbor.Cautious people say, ‘I’ll do nothing until I can be sure’. Merchants know better. If you do nothing, you lose. Don’t be one of those merchants who won’t risk the ocean.”  – Rumi

yaaaaaaaaaay life!

things are needless to say going very well.  i am super busy, but still have down time to reflect.  :)

hope everyone is having a great week!

here is a picture from my trip down south…  now unless you know me really well you probably don’t know that i have a little bit of a fear of open bodies of water like the ocean and lakes…  i felt i had a little bit of a breakthrough in south carolina because i was able to wade all the way out until the water reached my waist!  baby steps, people.  i loved frolicking in the really shallow water, though!!!

it was beautiful!
